According to the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity Report to the President, “The childhood obesity epidemic in America is a national health crisis.  One in every three children (31.7%) ages 2-19  is overweight or obese.”   “When our First Lady, Michelle Obama began talking about childhood obesity, that renewed my interest in teaching kids about healthy cooking and eating”, said Aminah Williams founder of Kidz Café.

“Just like Mrs. Obama, I believe that we can solve childhood obesity issues in one generation. Currently, one out of every three children is now overweight or obese, a condition that places them at greater risk of developing diabetes, heart disease, and cancer over the course of their lives.  With my background in counseling and being a parent, these stats are alarming to me, that’s why I am educating children about healthy eating through Kidz Cafe,” stated Ms. Williams.

“I know parents want healthy children, but they think healthy eating is costly. You can feed your family at Mc Donalds for $10 dollars or feed them healthy by cooking a pot of spaghetti and a salad. That’s why it’s important for me to teach healthy eating on a budget to the children.”  According to the National Diabetes Education Program 186,300 people under the age of 20 have Type I and Type II diabetes, one of the biggest factors for this is unhealthy eating,” explained Ms. Williams.

In the culinary classes at Kidz Cafe, we teach the children much more than just cooking. Learning how to cook has many educational benefits.  Studying culinary arts helps children in core areas like math, reading, and science.  It gives them an early look at agricultural science.  Students learn leaderships skills and how to follow instructions in the kitchen.  Children in our classes discover the benefits of team work.

Ms. Williams was inspired to start teaching children cooking based on her personal experience.  Kidz Cafe has been in operation over a year now.

She has served up delicious cupcakes and bakery items for the past 10 years through her catering company, Aminah’s Treats.  Having five children of her own, Ms. Williams realized that she was never alone in the kitchen. There were always little helpers around as she whipped up her famous goodies.  After hearing similar stories from fellow cooks, friends, and family she decided to use her culinary knowledge to teach kids culinary skills.
